As you walk along the boardwalks of Old Sacramento you are immersed in another time. A time when the word
'gold' was on the lips of everyone you passed and the anticipation of fortunes to be made created a vibrant
energy that can still be felt in the atmosphere today.
Old Sacramento is a National Landmark that boasts 53 historic buildings and 5 million visitors annually.
While the area has seen vast improvements since it was first redeveloped in the 60's, it is the goal of
the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation to realize the area's potential as California's hub of historic
education and preservation. By broadening the historic and cultural offerings of Old Sacramento, the
story of California's beginnings can be preserved and shared in a way that truly brings history to life.
Goals As Good As Gold
The mission of the HOSF is to improve Old Sacramento as a historic and cultural asset by preserving and
protecting the historic district while also conducting interpretive, historical and entertainment programs.
To accomplish our mission, the Foundation has set ambitious goals, a few of which are outlined below. With your help, we can reach them.
- Advocate for a major gold rush visitor attraction
- Offer regular walking tours of Old Sacramento
- Increase the number of historical events
- Improve the signage and retail mix in the district
- Improve the marketing of Old Sacramento as a place to learn history
- Promote a self-guided audio tour
- Expand the number of Living History volunteers
Be A Part of History
When you become a member of the HOSF, you become a part of history. Your role in bringing our city's
first neighborhood to its full potential as a place to learn history will help us to share our colorful
and exciting past with visitors from California and around the world. What's more, you will also be
contributing to its preservation as a historic district so that future generations may walk its boardwalks,
tour its historic buildings and learn about California's beginnings in an accurate and engaging way.
All members are encouraged to participate on a more personal level by volunteering their time and efforts.
Volunteer positions are numerous and provide our members with opportunities to get involved with history
by sharing their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm. Put your love of history to good use by joining the
Old Sacramento Living History Program, helping with a fundraising event or assisting in a historical event in Old Sacramento.
